"I am just reacting to the point above in which someone said I was preaching or condenscending" William Tell

I certainly hope that was not directied at me.....I said no mention of anyones name whatsoever nor said anyone was preaching.....I said I (key word is me) don't preach about 69 through 78' being the best......

Trust me, I'm very picky with what I collect from the Grateful Dead (it took me 8 years of being a hard-headed trader to listen to a show from the 80's) and I COMPLETLY understand fans staying in the era or years they enjoy....That might be one of the greatest things about this band is that there are so many shades and colors to pick from....

Again, that was not directed to any paticular person here, especially you Tell.....I enjoy reading your posts thourghly..

My bad--was combining inferences and such into one over the top characterization of folks that take that approach.

At one level, we all do it, but I was suggesting it's not so much because the "other" guy says "you stink!" as it is because WE internalize it and turn it around ("hmmm, they never tell me 68 is way better than everything else, so there must be something wrong with my period or they'd see it my way, ergo, they just said I suck!").

Splitting hairs at some level with this pure speculative psycho babble.

No hard feelings.

"one man gathers what another man spills"

or, as the fisherman said upon discovering the sea was made of whiskey, "We're gonna have to piss in the boat from now on."

traditional, full lyrics:

If the River Was Whiskey

If the river was whiskey and I was a duck
I'd dive to the bottom and I'd never come up

Oh tell me how long do I have to wait
Oh can I get you now, mustn't hesitate

If the river was whiskey and the branch was wine
You'd see me in swimming just any ole time

I was born in England, raised in France
I bought a suit of clothes and they wouldn't send the pants

I was born in Alabama, raised in Tennesee
If you don't like my peaches then don't shake my tree

I looked down the road just as far as I can see
A man had my woman and the blues had me

I ain't no doctor but the doctor's son
I can do the doctoring till the doctor comes

Got the hesitation stockings got the hesitation shoes
Oh my Lord I got the hesitation blues

I was born in Kingston, raised in Rosendale
I went through a stop sign and they threw me in jail

interesting lyrics, one of many versions

Love it - thanks

Johnny Winter version - lyrics attributed to Sleepy John Estes

If the river was whiskey and I was a divin',
Baby I was a divin' duck
(Oh) If the river was whiskey and I was a divin' duck
I would dive on the bottom, baby I would never come up

Well the sun gonna shine in my back door
Baby in my back door some day
Sun gonna shine in my back door someday
Well the wind gonna rise, blow my nat'ral blues away

(Yes it is)

Wrap your arms around me like a circle round the sun
I want you to love me pretty mama like my easy rider done
Wrap your legs around me like a circle round the sun
I want to you love me, pretty mama like my easy rider done

(Go ahead and ride on)

[Instrumental]

If I can't come in let me sit down by your
Baby let me sit down by your door
If I can't come in, let me sit down by your door
I can love you so easy it's your husband will never know

If the river was whiskey and I was a divin'
Baby, I was a divin' duck
(Oh) If the river was whiskey and I was a divin' duck
I would dive and dive, baby I would never come up

I would dive on the bottom baby, I would never come up
Oh, I would drive on the bottom, good girl would never come up
